15th Session of the Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council was held in Tashkent

On 27 November, 2008 the International Business Center in Tashkent hosted the 15th Session of the Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council (UBTIC). 

The event was attended by members of UBTIC from both Uzbek and British sides. The meeting began with welcoming speeches of UBTIC co-chairmen HE Mr. Elyor Ganiev - Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan, and Dr. Hartley Booth - Representative of UK Trade and Investment.

Having briefed participants on the current macro-economic indicators of Uzbekistan, Minister Ganiev underlined that there are good opportunities for British investments in such sectors of Uzbek economy as textile, electrical, chemical, food, construction and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in tourism.  

In turn, Dr. Booth read out a message of HE Mr. Gareth Thomas, Minister for Trade, Investment and Consumer Affairs of the UK, addressed to the participants of the 15th session of UBTIC. He underlined the impressive performance of Uzbekistan in the economic field in recent years, which was reached due to the balanced development of all sectors of the economy of the country. Uzbekistan is an attractive market for British investments because of its favorable investment and business climate, steady economic growth and political stability in the country.

Presentations were also made by the Deputy minister of foreign economic relations, investments and trade Mr. Shavkat Tulyaganov on the theme: «The state of and prospects for further development of investment cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom», Deputy minister of economy Mr. Shokir Fayzullaev on: «The main directions of cooperation in Clean Development Mechanism projects», and first Deputy minister of agriculture and water resources Mr. Erkinjon Turdimov. Number of other presentations was made on specific investment projects by other members of the Uzbek delegation. In turn, several members of the British delegation, namely «Oxus Gold Plc», «Worley Parsons», «Denton Wilde Sapte», «Great Silk Way Resources» and «British-American Tobacco» also made presentations.

Along with UBTIC session, the British economic delegation led by Dr. Booth had a number of bilateral meetings with Uzbek counterparts, where perspective areas of cooperation were discussed.
