Thanks to tremendous efforts and enthusiasm of number of cultural organization in the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan, ancient heritage and contemporary arts of our country was presented in Glasgow. A range of events from June 2008 till January 2009 are aimed to show and extend knowledge of Glaswegians and guests of this famous city about the wide spectrum of Uzbek culture – from unique embroidery and Central Asian music to life-experience of craftswomen to deeply rooted traditions.
Most of this are organized within the Burrell Collection’s Exhibition “Colours of the Silk Road: Suzani embroideries from Uzbekistan” (20 June 2008 – 4 January 2009). One of the Oriental treasures of Sir William Burrell – 19th century collection of decorative wall hangings and an ornate wedding sheet from Bukhara – is not only exhibited, but also accompanied by lectures, workshops, music and dance performances.
Uzbek culture experience began with a visit of internationally renowned folklore group “Ofarin”. On Wednesday 18th June, “Ofarin” performed in the Russian Café-Gallery “Cossachok” - an evening of Uzbek culture which included, along with songs and melodies demonstrating the technical capabilities of Uzbek national instruments, also an exhibition of unique photographs of 1920-1930s Uzbekistan vis-à-vis modern pictures of our country; video installation and a special menu of culinary delights from the Central Asia. Event also included a presentation of Fund Forum of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan.
On Thursday 19th June, “Ofarin” participated in official launch of the Burrell Collection exhibition, as well as made a workshop-concert in one of the Glasgow schools. Visits to the schools went on Friday. Another highlight of famous Uzbek musicians stay in Glasgow became the concert during annual Mela Festival on Sunday 22nd June.
These thread of events were thoroughly organized and generously supported by Fund Forum of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan, British Council, Burrell Collection (Culture & Sport Glasgow), Russian Cultural Centre (Scotland) / Café-Gallery Cossachok and Oxus Gold Plc.
