Congratulations to the President of Uzbekistan from the Chairman and Chief Executive of the British Council on the occasion of Tashkent’s Anniversary and Independence Day

Your Excellency, I have great pleasure in conveying my very best wishes and those of the British Council to you and the people of Uzbekistan on the occasion of the 2,200th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Tashkent, now the biggest city in Central Asia, à modern megapolis, à bridge between East and West and à crossroad of cultures and business. I was fortunate enough to visit the city in October 2008, during which time l was privileged to view Hazrati Imam Ensmemble and Osman's Koran. It is a powerful illustration of Tashkent's place as one of the great centres of Islamic culture, enlightenment and which continues to make à special contribution to the world civilization. Of course, cities change, but the richest are those that manage to preserve their history and also to be dynamically modern and it is here that I think Tashkent and London share something special. May I also take this opportunity to congratulate you and the people of Uzbekistan on 18th anniversary of Independence and I trust you will not mind if I mention that this year the British Council celebrates our own 75th Anniversary. It is à significant milestone in our work of building cultural bridges, including those between your great capital city, your country and our own.
