Lord Gillford’s article about motorbike rally from London to Central Asia
Couple of years ago I agreed to deliver two motorbikes to a friend’s vineyard in Tbilisi. Two years on, somehow the bar had to be raised and so we set about planning the 2009 the London - Tbilisi - Almaty Rally.
We left London on the 15th August as a team of 6 and 3 of us finished 21 days and 9,200 kilometres later in Almaty. In that time we travelled through 17 countries, stayed in the best hotels but also camped and cooked for ourselves in some of the most remote places in Asia.
Amongst all 17 countries Uzbekistan shone as a beacon of hospitality, warmth and “can-do mentality”. The Capital City Tashkent is as beautiful a City as any I have seen with trees lining literally every street.
There are so many examples of kindness shown to us that it is hard to single one out, except perhaps the Foreign Ministry official who gave up his public holiday on Independence Day up to midnight to ensure that our visas were renewed and our visit remained lawful.
