Leasing Goes Upbeat

Last year, more than 7,000 leases totaling over 590 billion soums ($293m) were signed in the leasing market of Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan Lessors Association held meeting in Tashkent on the results of 2012 and identifying the challenges for the future. As mentioned by participants, leasing is one of the most effective mechanisms for modernization of industry, agriculture. Today, as the country is creating a multipurpose agricultural sector, in which modern high-processing workshops is to play a major role, the very leasing is coming to the fore. Farmers and entrepreneurs, who do not have enough money to buy high-quality imported machinery can benefit from the easy-on and run their own business, paying the cost of the purchased equipment is on its income.

Experts also point out the increasing number of players in the market. Last year, 99 lessors provided such services. Much of the credit for this goes to the formed legislative base, which enshrined a number of privileges and preferences of the market participants. For example, equipment imported for leasing is exempt from VAT and customs duties, object of leasing - from property tax, leasing services - from income tax.

Overall, over 7,000 transactions were concluded at the market. To note that the figure for the previous year increased by more than 22%. Traditionally, the most popular products are leasing of agricultural machinery and production equipment. Also, leasing of vehicles has taken a significant share of the market. The total portfolio of leasing transactions for the reporting period exceeded 1.29 trillion soums ($6,4b). (Source: Uzbekistan Today newspaper).
