Agriculture remains the backbone and one of the most important sectors of Uzbekistan’s economy contributing more than 17% to the country’s GDP and employing over 25% of the labour force.
Despite cotton traditionally still being dominant in the total agricultural output, its share has steadily been decreased within the last few years due to the government’s diversification policy. Thanks to favourable climatic conditions, the total production of fruits and vegetables reached 18 million tons in 2015. However, 35-40% of this output is lost due to a lack of modern processing equipment and technology. The government has announced an investment plan of over $1 billion for the modernization of its agricultural sector in the upcoming years which entails the purchase of processing, packaging and storage facilities.
From May 31 to June 3, 2016 Uzexpocentre will host Uzbekistan XI International Exhibition for Agriculture and Food Industry. The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan receiving full government support. Offering a wide range of agro industrial products and services last year’s event accommodated 165 companies from 30 countries and attracted a number of large and small-sized farmers as well as entrepreneurs from across Uzbekistan. 708 signed contracts for the purchase of equipment between exhibitors and visitors underline the long-standing reputation of Uzbekistan Agrominitech Expo as a platform for the establishment of prospective cooperation between foreign producers of specialized equipment and buyers from Uzbekistan.
