FOREIGN ECONOMIC RELATIONS OF UZBEKISTAN IN 2005

 

Uzbekistan’s Trade in 2005

 

EU is one of the main trade partners of Uzbekistan. In 2005 trade turnover with the EU countries totalled 1586 mln USD which was 105,1% growth in relation to 2004.

 

Amongst the European Union member countries, biggest trade turnover was recorded with the United Kingdom -430,2 mln USD, Germany - 325,8 mln.USD, France - 132,7 mln.USD, Italy - 86,2 mln.USD, and Latvia - 101,7 mln.USD, Poland - 64,1 mln.USD, Lithuania - 45,2 mln.USD, Czech Republic - 34,8 mln.USD.

 

Total export to EU countries came down by 4,7% comparing to 2004 and reached 765,6 mln.USD. Export to “old” Europe decreased by 5,2%.

 

The biggest amount of export came to the UK (335,6 mln.USD), France (89,2 mln.USD), Belgium (36,8 mln.USD), the Netherlands (35,6 mln.USD), Italy (27,7 mln.USD), and Latvia (79,2 mln.USD), Poland (21,6 mln.USD), Estonia (14,3 mln.USD), Cyprus (1,6 mln.USD).

 

Classification of the goods, exported to the EU countries, had 40 variations. Cotton remained to be main export of Uzbekistan followed by precious metals, jewellery, cotton fibre and cotton yarn, services, plastics, non-precious metals, non-organic chemical products, non-ferrous metals and their erratics.

 

Total amount of the goods, imported to Uzbekistan rose by 16,3% in relation to 2004 and totalled 820,8 mln.USD. Import of the goods from “old” European countries rose by 4,6% (603,6 mln.USD), from new countries it was up 85,2% (190,1 mln.USD).

 

List of biggest importing countries to Uzbekistan included Germany (239,8 mln.USD), the UK (mln.USD), Italy (58,5 mln.USD), France (43,5 mln.USD), Austria (41,9 mln.USD), and Poland 42,4 mln.USD), Lithuania (36,9 mln.USD), Czech Republic (33,2 млн. mln.USD), Latvia (22,5 mln.USD), Hungary (16,4 mln.USD).

 

Classification of goods, imported to Uzbekistan had 80 variations of goods, including mechanical equipments, electric equipments, pharmaceutical products, sugar, confectionary, paper, instruments, apparatus and optical devices.

 

In general, total trade turnover with European countries was up by 5% and totalled 1 817,1 mln.USD. Volume of export reduced by 7,1% (923,2 mln.USD), the import rose by 21,4% (893,9 mln.USD).

Main trade partners of Uzbekistan amongst non-EU members included Switzerland (174,1 mln.USD), Romania (33,9 mln.USD), Lichtenstein (10 mln.USD), Bulgaria (7,7 mln.USD).

Enterprises with European Investments

 

According to the data of Uzbekistan State Committee on statistics by 01.11.2005., total number of enterprises with European capital was 583, amongst them 426 are joint ventures, 102 fully owned foreign enterprises and 52 with various ownership form.

 

The enterprises are involved in whole-sale business sector (20,1%), textile industry (13%), food processing (12,2%), machine building, metal processing (11,7%), construction works (7,9%), chemical industry (4,5%), wood processing (4,1%), agriculture (3,4%), transport (2,4%) and others.

 

In terms of countries, greater number of investors come from the UK (171), Germany (125), Italy (47), the Netherlands (42), Austria (23), Czech Republic (23), Cyprus (23) and Latvia (23).

 

Total number of all enterprises with investments from European countries is 1031, including 718 joint ventures, 186 fully foreign owned companies, and 127 enterprises with various ownership forms.

 

Greater number of enterprises from non-EU member countries come from Turkey (338), Switzerland (73), Bulgaria (19) and Lichtenstein (14).

 

Representation Offices of Foreign Companies from EU

 

Nearly 204 representation offices of foreign companies from EU are registered within the Ministry of foreign economic relations and investments of Uzbekistan. 166 of them come from “old” European countries and 38 come from new members of the European Union. They represent Germany (53), United Kingdom (44), France (14), Netherlands (16), Austria (12), Poland (11), Latvia (11), Czech Republic (8), Cyprus (7), Italy (6).

 

Their activity involves such areas as export-import operations, services, mining industry, machine building, chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, transport, informational-technological and etc.

 

In total, the number of repoffices from all European countries is 311. Representation offices from non-EU countries come from Turkey (70), Switzerland (29), Bulgaria (4), Lichtenstein (3) and former Yugoslavia (1).

 

Investment Cooperation

 

Total amount of investments from European countries within the Investment programme of Uzbekistan was 3 772,14 mln.USD. In 2005 about 725,44 mln.USD investments were fully developed, including 201,43 mln.USD loans which were guaranteed by the Government of Uzbekistan. Within the Investment Programme, 524,01 mln.USD investments were implemented in the form of direct portfolios and credits.

 

European investments were made into the following sectors of economy:

 

-machine building, mining, energy, chemical industry, oil and gas and geology - 127,98 mln.USD;

 

-manufacture of consumer products - 92,56 mln.USD;

 

-regional areas - 72,06 mln.USD;

 

-general economic sector - 64,69 mln.USD;

 

-sector of small and medium businesses - 52,15 mln.USD;

 

-sector of public services - 22,02 mln.USD;

 

-transport, construction and communications - 8,13 mln.USD.

 

Financial and Technical Assistance

 

In cooperation with the EU, 22 projects and programmes were developed, including 13 projects of national level for the amount of - 22,05 mln.euro and 9 regional projects for the total amount of - 24,83 mln.euro. 4 of the national projects (6,8 mln.euro) and 1 regional project (2 mln.euro) were completed last year.

 

Within the Strategy of EU Commission for 2002-2006, 270 mln.euro will be allocated to the Central Asian states, including 45 mln.euro for realisation of national projects in Uzbekistan.

 

To date, nearly 129,8 mln.euro was realised within the programmes of technical assistance.

 

Bilaterally, 11 projects for the amount of 101,351 mln.USD are being implemented at the moment. They include:

 

- Electrification of «Tashkent-Angren» railways  (25 mln.euro)-Germany;

 

- «Khoresm district water supply improvement project» (13,8 mln. euro) - Germany;

 

- «Professional education system improvement project» (8,7 mln. euro) – Germany;

 

- «Promotion of SMEs - III» (6 mln. euro) - Germany;

 

- «Fight against TB -IV (2,5 mln. euro) - Germany;

 

- Reconstruction of International Tashkent Airport (1,6 mln. euro) -          Germany

 

-  «Professional educational system improvement» (15 mln.USD - 12,5 mln.euro) - Poland;

 

- «Water supply improvement in Bukhara district»   (16,175 mln. euro)-Spain;

 

- «Professional Education system development»   (8  mln. euro) - Belgium;

 

- «Reconstruction of Yujno-Golodnostep Canal (III phase)» (4,9 mln.euro) - France;

- «Development of tap-water system in Karakalpakstan» (2,176 mln. euro) - France.
