A delegation from the Czech Republic headed by the Foreign Minister Yaroslav Bashta paid a visit to Uzbekistan. The two sides held negotiations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan.
The foundations of the political dialog between Uzbekistan and the Czech Republic were laid during the official visit by the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to the Czech Republic in January 1997. The first round of political consultations between the foreign ministries of the two states took place in 2000 when the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic visited Uzbekistan.
The current meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan embraced a constructive dialog about the current state and perspectives of the Uzbek-Czech relations. More specifically, it was noted that the two countries' ties in political, economic and humanitarian spheres based on mutual interest are developing in a consecutive fashion. The visits by the Foreign Ministers of the Czech Republic V. Klaus and M. Zeman in 1997 and 1999 gave the Uzbek-Czech relations a special dynamics.
The legal and treaty base of the economic relations is composed of intergovernmental agreements "on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation" and "on mutual encouragement and protection of investment". However, the commodity exchange as of 2006 which totaled US$ 45,7 million reveals that on the whole the Uzbek-Czech trade-economic and investment cooperation does not yet correspond to the opportunities of the two countries.
As of late, there has been a positive tendency in more active cooperation between the parliaments of Uzbekistan and the Czech Republic. In 2003, Uzbekistan was visited by representatives of the Senate of the Czech Republic: the Chairperson of the Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security Y. Yaraba and the Chairperson of the Committee of Economy, Transport and Agriculture M. Balaban. In 2005, members of the Committee for foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Czech Senate, T. Irsy and V. Segnala visited Uzbekistan. The visit included meetings in the relevant committees of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, of Defense and of Health, as well as in Tashkent mayor's office.
