Integration of transport systems in these Central Asian republics will further the development of their economic and social cooperation, according to Serik Akhmetov, the Kazakh Minister for transport and communications.
A range of issues relating to Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan integration in the transport sphere were subject to in-detail consideration at the 2nd Meeting of the Interstate Coordination Council in Tashkent.
The ongoing transport projects mainly focus on modernization of existing infrastructure and construction of new installations.
In accordance with the Program for the development of motor transport between 2006 and 2012, several international and transit corridors running across Kazakhstan, including outlets in Uzbekistan, will be created.
In particular, under the Western Europe - Western China Project, the motor-roads Tashkent - Shymkent - Almaty - Khorgos (1,137 km) and Tashkent - Shymkent - Kyzylorda - Aktobe - Uralsk - Samara (2,048 km) will be subject to complete reconstruction in the 2008-2012 period.
The Republic of Kazakhstan is now trying its utmost to develop the 788 km Astrakhan - Atyrau - Beineu - Kungrad section of the E-40 international motor route Western Europe - Russia - Kazakhstan - Uzbekistan - Kazakhstan. In the current year, one more transport project will be brought to completion, namely the construction of a bridge across the border Kigach River on the Astrakhan - Atyrau section and reconstruction of the 397-km Atyrau - Beineu section.
As for cooperation between the two countries in the field of civil aviation, it is being developed under the May 25, 1994 Agreement on Air Communication.
The bright prospects for further coordinated steps in the transport sphere will allow Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to intensify their collaboration, while utilizing their vast transit potentialities on terms of mutual benefit.
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Power Engineering was commissioned to conduct talks with the corresponding departments of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on the development of interaction in the fuel and power sector, particularly the possibility of creating a single power system in the region.
